A language within a broader history
AdvPL did not emerge in isolation. Its development is connected to the evolution of management systems first built by Siga and later by Microsiga. In her analysis of TOTVS as a case of innovation and internationalization, Stal (2010, pp. 134–137) describes a business path shaped by proprietary technology, franchise-based distribution and expansion into other countries.
This context explains why an xBase-compatible language became strategically important. Silva (2004, p. 11) dates the beginning of AdvPL to 1994, while Stal (2010, p. 136) records 1999 as the launch of Advanced Protheus Language. These dates are best treated as different milestones rather than necessarily conflicting accounts.
From services to management software
The story begins in 1974 with Siga, described as a service bureau for automating administrative processes. Microsiga was created in 1983 to explore the potential of microcomputing in management systems (STAL, 2010, p. 134).
The franchise project began in 1989. It expanded commercial reach while preserving proximity to customers and regional knowledge. Stal (2010, p. 135) identifies distribution, qualification and product breadth among the competitive advantages built by the company.
Technological independence and expansion
In 1993, technological independence became an essential growth objective. ISO 9001 certification in 1996 and Microsiga Argentina in 1997 belong to this period of organization and internationalization (STAL, 2010, pp. 135–136).
The academic study associates 1999 with the launch of ADVPL. A careful reference therefore preserves both attributions: 1994 as the beginning of its evolution according to Silva (2004, p. 11), and 1999 as the launch recorded by Stal (2010, p. 136).
The formation of TOTVS
Expansion into Mexico occurred in 2003 through the acquisition of Sipros assets. Between 2005 and 2008, the organization merged with Logocenter, adopted the TOTVS name, went public, acquired RM Sistemas, created EuroTOTVS and acquired Datasul (STAL, 2010, pp. 136–137).
For AdvPL readers, this chronology places the language within a business and technology ecosystem spanning several product generations. It complements rather than replaces TDN technical documentation.
